Nalata Nalata is pleased to present our second exhibition of works by Ryuji Mitani, A Deeper Dark. Renowned for wooden pieces with a distinctly tactile surface texture and painterly application of white and black lacquer, Mitani spent much of his life creating wooden tableware and writing about his craft. As the leader of the Japanese contemporary craft movement Seikatsu Kogei, his practice maintains a propensity towards everyday functionality as the works evolved over several decades.

A Deeper Dark is the first installment of a two-part exhibition that will highlight the distinctive qualities of “darkness” and “lightness” in the artisan’s practice and provide a profound understanding of each direction. We will explore how the contrasts of dark and light in black and white are integrated into our daily life, and the versatility of these opposing colors in tableware.

By focusing on darkness in this first exhibit, we look to the way black signifies strength and depth in Mitani’s wooden tableware that adds impact to a dish and awakens our senses to the potential of specific ingredients highlighted on its surface. This exhibit will also showcase how darkness translates in the density, textures and finishes of Mitani’s pieces as demonstrated in the various carving and lacquer techniques of his practice. The artisan classifies his lacquered works into the main categories of Noir, Usuzumi and Hakuboku. Noir is a thick, solid black technique that allows viewers to appreciate the dark urushi hidden in the shadows of a piece as the deep faceted textures reflect light. Usuzumi features faint inky white touches against a smooth dark background – a subtle suggestion of smoke and spirits. Lastly, Hakuboku showcases solid black urushi on the exterior of a piece, with solid white accents on the interior.

Ryuji Mitani works in a variety of dark woods including Jindainire (神代楡), a rare wood originating from buried trees affected by ash that is then coveted in Japan for its symbolic reference about transformation. The wood develops character deep underground from pure darkness and emerges into something beautiful and revered. In these unique pieces, often the interpretation outside of the literal is the most fascinating in its philosophical sense.

Join us as we embark on a two-year long, two-part exhibition exploring the full range of the artisan’s practice, as well as his substantial contributions in the field of contemporary woodcraft. We hope to share the fascinating amount of insights into his approach of marrying deep thought and consideration with the warmth of objects made by hand that make him as multi-faceted as his works.

Nalata Nalata is pleased to announce Shiro and Shiro, a forthcoming exhibition of designs by renowned designer Makoto Koizumi RSVP here for the opening reception.

The words shiro (白) and shiro (素) mean “white” and “basic”. Brought together in the context of design, the concept explores complex and shifting ideas about simplicity, purity, and truth. 

To design with honesty is no easy task, for one must have the vision to discern the immaterial from the core.  

Makoto Koizumi possesses that ability to see the possibilities that lie beyond an established structure and define both what is missing and what is extraneous. With this sensitivity, he strips away all excess until only what is essential remains. His deep comprehension of how each small part exists to form the whole gives every detail equal weight in his careful hands. 

In this exhibition, we are pleased to present collections of objects designed by Koizumi-san to reveal their essence. Free from excess, the inner qualities of each piece are poignantly felt. There is a moving connection between the intrinsic nature of the material and the object’s function: organically textured cups and bowls showcase the bright properties of tin; a chair is luminous in the purity of its form; minimal white ceramic tableware captures the tranquil spirit of tea ceremony.  

The grace in these objects is arresting and universal. Without distraction, without embellishment, they are powerful reminders of all the potential that begins from discarding the superfluous to seek out the truth.

To encounter Takayoshi Narita’s work is to find oneself questioning how poetry can be forged from the prosaic.

Iron and steel, both dense, hard bodied materials, instill heavy, industrial associations in our minds. We don’t imagine the delicate edges that can be hammered from an elemental block. Nor do we question the overwhelmingly uniform textures these materials bear in the forms they are so often presented to us in. Yet, iron can be delicate and soft; steel: light and graceful; perhaps most surprising, both these materials can bear the unique marks of an artisans’s hand.

Viewing Narita-san’s collection reveals the depth that can be contained in an object millimeters thin, that grazes the ceiling of potential locked inside such raw material.

Narita-san’s objects take on fluid shapes, seamlessly transitioning from slender handles to yawning basins. At times their forms are almost edgeless. Imagining that his pieces were once thick iron rods is almost impossible. Envisioning the process and energy that went into their promethean creation is even more so. Upon looking closer, they do bear scars of their transformation. Like natural rock formations, deep and shadowy textures give some indication to the sheer number of times the material has been effected by heat and hammering. The result, a surface so varied it can only be likened to the terrain of another planet.

It may come as little surprise that before he began working metal some 20 years ago, Narita-san had trained as a classical oil painter. Since the transition his journey has been persistent and focused. He crafts a relatively narrow array of items by himself, inside a workshop he built in the mountains of Minakami in Gunma Prefecture. His most renowned item, and the genesis of his craft, is a hammered frying pan, meant to be seasoned and changed by everyday use. We are exceedingly proud and honored to be hosting Narita-san’s first US exhibition on October 5th. Nalata Nalata is pleased to present Shaping the Void, an exhibition of works by Masanobu Ando, one of the foremost contemporary Japanese artisans working in ceramics. RSVP here.

This exhibition celebrates Masanobu Ando, and his admirable career as a ceramic artisan and Tea Master. His works are crafted with high skill yet are intentionally asymmetrical and irregular, showcasing the marks of their maker.

Masanobu Ando’s works are predominantly slab-built, using sheets of clay that are molded together to form a variety of shapes – a technique called tatara that was handed down from previous generations in Tajimi, one of the many renown pottery cities of Japan. Born in Tajimi, the artisan naturally embraced this technique as it enabled expression of his underlying concept of Zen culture, which is centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection.

For the curation of this exhibition, attention has been paid to the processes that went into forming the ceramic vessels from which the artisan’s philosophies derive. A focus on teaware is presented alongside a one-of-a-kind Masanobu Ando x Nalata Nalata collaboration piece that will be unveiled on opening night.

Nalata Nalata is pleased to present Blurring Boundaries, an exhibition of wooden tableware by Ryuji Mitani. This is his first solo exhibition in the United States. RSVP here.

Much of the distinction between the applied and the design arts break down when looking at the wood works by one of Japan’s most renown contemporary artisans, Ryuji Mitani. With the intention of creating pieces that seamlessly integrate into our everyday lives, Ryuji Mitani uses a combination of traditional carving, chiseling and lacquering to transform solid wood into functional tableware items for the needs of modern day living.

The exhibition is organized in sections that focus on the artisan’s carved solid wood tableware items such as bowls, trays, plates and drinking vessels, to his works that incorporate lacquer in painterly black, white and hazy strokes. A rarely seen collection of small painted wood brooches has also been organized. They exemplify Ryuji Mitani’s earliest works as a younger wood artisan, before he went on to solidify his status as a pioneer of the Seikatsu Kougei movement of Japan. Additionally, a Ryuji Mitani x Nalata Nalata collaboration piece will be revealed on opening night.

Aesthetically charming and ultimately functional, the collections by Momoko and Tetsuya Otani showcase the possibilities of the ceramic medium. Our exhibition of works by this master potter couple are distinct from one another, yet influenced by each other through the studio and home that they share in the historic pottery city of Shigaraki, Japan. Since they farm, cook and eat meals as one family unit, their work and personal lifestyles are connected, in turn informing the utility of their respective collections.

Tetsuyaʼs porcelain wares are relatable in size, beautiful in shape and remarkable in their refined feel. He uses a wheel throwing technique to create numerous pieces from ornament vases to tableware. They feature unique matte glazes, a defining characteristic.

On the other hand, Momokoʼs iron-rich clay pieces are textured with layers of colors and motifs born from her love of lotus flowers. She hand forms, hand paints and utilizes a special sgraffito technique whereby surface designs are etched onto thin layers of slip.

We are proud to present the love in which each handmade piece holds at its core and welcome you to vicariously experience life at the OTANIʼs for this special event. On Friday, August 18, the Otani couple including their three daughters will be present at the Opening Reception of this exhibition, in which refreshments and specialty Shigaraki sake (brought by the Otanis from Japan) will be served. On August 20, there will be a pour-over drip Coffee Demonstration by Tetsuya Otani from 1-2PM.

Cutlery creates an intimate connection between the user and utensil. The purpose of the utensil is to function as an extension of the hand, to deliver food from the plate to the mouth, on occasion as precious components of a tablescape during a special gathering, but often times as necessity for daily meals.

By its very nature, Mitsuhiro Konishi’s handmade cutlery collection is intimate. One artist, a single maker, creates an object with a clear purpose – precious in size, rich in texture, overwhelming in its delicate relationships of scale and proportion. His materials of choice, steel and brass, are elementary substances and his techniques are age-old, fundamental ways of shaping metal by one’s very own hands. Through laboriously hand hammering, forging, heating and bending, Konishi creates functional, yet aesthetically pleasing flatware.

In the works for this exhibition, Konishi developed pieces that draw from tradition, celebrating classic utensil types, while synthesizing his background as a sculptor to inspire new forms for dinner sets and serving tools. Ultimately, the goal in producing these works is to make strikingly familiar and immaculately executed implements that are precious and personal objects intended for everyday use.

We are pleased to be showcasing Mitsuhiro Konishi’s metal cutlery collection during this solo exhibition, entitled Table Elements. Mitsuhiro Konishi and his wife, Kimiko will be traveling from Japan to attend the opening reception. His complete collection of flatware and serveware will be on display including his acclaimed mixed metal series, characterized by their hand hammered textures. A new line of serving utensils and a forged metal series of cutlery will also be on display showcasing some of Konishi’s newest designs. We will also be releasing new series of collaboratively designed metal turners exclusively for Nalata Nalata during the event.

Many of Konishi’s designs and skills as a metal craftsmen stems from his artwork. We’ve asked Konishi to bring a small selection of his metal wall hangings and metal wire sculptures to Nalata Nalata to illustrate the inspiration behind his works. We’re honored to be able to highlight this connection between his artworks and designs.

Friday, June 16th marks the opening reception! Enjoy an evening of shopping, sake from the Gifu Prefecture (Konishi’s hometown) and mochi by Mochi Rin. Opening remarks by Mitsuhiro Konishi will commence at 7:30pm. The works will be on view through June 22nd and available for purchase at this time. New works will be made available online after the opening reception alongside our current Mitsuhiro Konishi collection.

This exhibition welcomes Kanazawa based glass atelier, factory zoomer, to New York for their first solo exhibition in America. Central to the story is founder Kazumi Tsuji, who created the studio in 1999 and developed its signature style over the years. The factory zoomer collection combines the traditional blown glass-making method with a lengthy process of hand polishing, etching, tinting, cutting, and painting on glass.

As Kazumi Tsuji continues to evolve factory zoomer, she aims to widen the picture of contemporary glass, and to deepen the public’s appreciation and understanding of glass as tableware. With their handcrafted idiosyncrasies, she believes that each piece can create a feeling of joy in the palm of your hand – for example, the ‘Snow Glass’ comprised of hundreds of hand-etched dots, is a form with playfulness embedded within, making the simple act of drinking water more enjoyable.

It is our hopes that as the pieces are placed in more and more households around the world, this sentiment indeed resonates intimately amongst collectors of this special collection.

This exhibition coincides with NYCxDESIGN week and will include a large selection of the factory zoomer mouth-blown glassware collection for purchase. Along with the main collection will be a special series of rock-cut whiskey glasses that we have designed in collaboration with Kazumi Tsuji.

Drinkware, pitchers, bowls, plates and containers will be available, all featuring the studio’s well known hand etched glass, tinted, painted white enamel, and black cut enamel techniques.

Kazumi Tsuji will be bringing confectionaries from her hometown of Kanazawa and a selection of Japanese whiskeys will be provided on opening night.

This exhibition is a rare opportunity to enjoy the collection of handcrafted scissors and shears by the Japanese atelier, Tajika.

The scissor trade requires skillful and ingenious artisans. One pair may take up to thirty stages in the production process, the principal of which are forging the scissors from a rod of steel of a suitable size, filing or ornamenting the shanks and bows, grinding and assembling, which includes screw-making, setting, or ensuring the scissors work evenly together, and whetting. The forging is the most difficult to learn, requiring years of practice to forge a simple pair of scissors with precision.

As a family-run company, Tajika has passed down their expertise, slowly mastering the production of specialized cutting tools for specific purposes. Daisuke Tajika has honed the rare artistry and now bears the responsibility of continuing the evolution of his family’s company as a fourth generation owner. Due to their ubiquity across cultures and professions, scissors have numerous representations across the world. Tajika’s interpretations include various scissors and shears for gardening, cooking, and sewing, to name a few. It goes without saying that the company has been left in good hands as Daisuke Tajika continues to carry forward the inventiveness that rests at the core of each pair of scissors.

On the evening of Friday, October 21st, we will be celebrating the official launch of a one-week exhibition at our gallery that will showcase the complete collection of scissors and shears by Tajika! Over 80 pairs of different handcrafted scissors and shears for specific purposes will be on display, including diagrams that depict the making process. Specialty tools and machines used in the crafting of each pair will be brought from Japan to further explain the intricate steps involved in forging and aligning the blades. Join us on this special evening as we welcome the atelier’s fourth generation owner, Daisuke Tajika, to New York City for his first international exhibition!

To coincide with the opening, we will also be introducing a collaboratively designed pair of scissors – the “Blackened Household Scissors” by Tajika x Nalata Nalata. The shape of this pair of scissors is based on the much-loved Copper and Household Scissors that we carry and use in store when we wrap gifts, but the finish is very different. We were inspired by the “Kuro-Mura” blackened brass pendants by Futagami because of the way they age over time, taking on a patina that is a very deep, saturated black. We were interested in creating a similar richness in shade and decided to work with Daisuke to produce a pair of everyday scissors that has the same principles.

This exhibition brings together a selection of items by leather specialist, Hender Scheme. Known for his innovative re-interpretation of iconic sneakers in natural vegetable-tanned leather, Tokyo-based designer and founder Ryo Kashiwazaki has branched into new categories, introducing this particular type of leather into products for the home. Natural veg-tan leather is known for it’s lack of chromium pigments or harmful chemically produced dyeing agents. The result is a smooth surface in a pale beige tone that eventually intensifies into a rich caramel color the more it is used.

Curated by Nalata Nalata, this exhibition is entitled RAW in reference to the fresh, unpolished appearance of leather when it is first transformed into a product. It is only until an item is in the hands of a user that it comes to life. As the personal habits of the individual take its toll on the piece, each scratch and imperfection gives it new character. One will only understand the unique nature of this material with time. A deliberate concept embedded into all of Hender Scheme’s products, in hopes that we can find the joy of discovery only with patience as “raw” becomes time-worn and cherished.

Join us on the evening of Friday, September 9th for the launch of the first ever Hender Scheme homewares exhibition. Head designer, Ryo Kashiwazaki will be in attendance as we showcase the full range of leather home products by the brand. The highlight of the exhibition includes a new chair collaboration with furniture company Karimoku, rugs, and lighting amongst other leather-focused items.
