Kumu
Contemporary Homewares by Oji Masanori & Friends
January 23-25, 2015
Nalata Nalata is pleased to present Kumu, an exhibition of Japanese Homewares by Oji Masanori and Friends. Kumu in Japanese means “to assemble”. In a deeper sense, it means to connect one place with another while embracing each other’s culture and community.
Kumu is an idea that stems from our desire to integrate the philosophy behind Japanese craft works and designs into our lifestyle. Good design should be practical, honest, beautiful and improve our everyday lives. On exhibit will be a selection of tableware items and household objects that do just that – integrates into a contemporary house and simply makes it a better place, one to call home.
We’re thrilled to be welcoming Oji Masonori and his community of designer and artisan friends to New York City for the second time and can’t wait to showcase their beautiful works at Nalata Nalata. We are exceedingly excited to be launching Oji and Design’s latest sake wares designed for the time honored porcelain studio, Jicon, from Arita. The series of vessels and a pitcher highlights Jicon’s signature satin glaze in shapes that elevate the flavour profiles of a variety of sake, much like in the tradition of specialty stemware for specific wine.
“We want to propagate the sort of lifestyle that involves being able to enjoy the act of observation.” – Daisuke Tsumanuma
In addition, designers Daisuke Tsumanuma and Kenichi Yamada of 10¹² Terra will be in attendance to introduce their full line of vases and terrariums including the launch of their new Showcase Long series for dried flowers.
“I feel like from working with plants I’ve been taught a few things about how to deal with things such as our relationships with each other.” – Kenichi Yamada
The three-day exhibition will begin with an opening reception and sake tasting event on January 23rd. Meet the designers behind the products on display while enjoying a selection of sake from Oji Masanori’s new vessels.
