A Different Familiar

We are pleased to present A Different Familiar, an exhibition exploring Hender Scheme’s collaborative practice and their new collection with Artek.

Hender Scheme has long found ways into familiar objects through material and construction. The difference often comes from putting familiar things into relationships we don’t expect. In their collaboration with Artek, this approach meets some of Alvar Aalto’s most enduring designs. Stool 60 and Table 90C are paired with vegetable-tanned leather, while the familiar language of footwear appears unexpectedly on furniture. What we know remains recognizable, but the relationship has changed.

These differences continue to develop through use. Birch and leather age at their own pace, taking on color, wear and patina according to their surroundings and the people who live with them. No two pieces are intended to remain exactly alike.

Having represented Hender Scheme’s collections for many years, we have been continually drawn to the way they look at the ordinary, finding another possibility within something already familiar. A Different Familiar looks at this idea through collaboration, material and the changes that come with use.
