Yukari
Discovering Connections in Japanese Homewares
Nov 15-17, 2013
Nalata Nalata is pleased to present Yukari, an exhibition of contemporary Japanese homewares.
We are honored to have the opportunity to host this special event that will coincide with Nalata Nalata’s pop-up shop opening in Manhattan, which will run up until Christmas with several design related events throughout the duration.
On November 15th, the pop-up shop will kickstart with an opening reception for our inaugural exhibition – organized in collaboration with Japanese design studios, Oji and Design and Asahikawa Woodworking. We will be exhibiting their new works at our temporary location and designer Oji Masanori himself will be our guest of honor for the event.
This exhibition is focused around the idea of a product being seen as a form of connection, or Yukari (a word used in Japan since ancient times). Yukari can be revealed through the relationships that exist between maker and designer, designer and user, and it can even create links between generations: past, present and future. On display will be a selection of contemporary housewares manufactured with traditional techniques. The outcomes of these relationships can be seen in tableware collections such as the Cara line designed by Rina Ono and the Kami series designed by Oji Masanori – both crafted by expert woodworker Takahashi Kougei.
“Many of the manufacturers I am involved with have been around for more than a century. Since they have continuously produced their products for a hundred years, I want to pour my efforts into seeing they continue to produce them for a hundred more.” – Oji Masanori
The opening reception of Yukari is on November 15th at 7:30PM. There will be a selection of sake from Sakaya NYC originating from the Hokkaido area in honor of the prefecture in which the Asahikawa Woodworking organization is located. If you can’t make it on this night, the show will stay up through till November 17th. We hope to see you out for a wonderful evening of great design and sake. Come discover Yukari!
