Raw
Natural Vegetan Leather Homewares
Sept 9-14, 2016
Nalata Nalata is pleased to present Raw, an exhibition of leather home goods by Hender Scheme. This exhibition brings together a selection of items by the leather specialist from Japan.
Known for his innovative re-interpretation of iconic sneaker models in natural vegetable-tanned leather, Tokyo-based designer and founder Ryo Kashiwazaki has branched into new categories, introducing their signature leather into products for the home. Natural veg-tan leather is known for its lack of chromium pigments and harmful chemically produced dyeing agents. The result is a smooth surface in a pale beige tone that eventually intensifies into a rich caramel color the more it is used.
Curated by Nalata Nalata, this exhibition is entitled Raw in reference to the fresh, unpolished appearance of leather when it is first transformed into a product. It is only until an item is in the hands of a user that it comes to life. As the personal habits of the individual take its toll on the piece, each scratch and imperfection give it new character. One will only understand the unique nature of this material with time. A deliberate concept embedded into all of Hender Scheme’s products, in hopes that we can find the joy of discovery only with patience as “raw” becomes time-worn and cherished.
The highlights of the exhibition include a new chair and footwear collaboration with renown furniture maker Karimoku. Furniture is associated with longevity as it is crafted to withstand years of repeated use. Hender Scheme’s first foray into furniture with Karimoku is in many ways the perfect joint effort. Genuine leather paired with solid wood form a durable combination that evolves throughout its lifespan, prevailing into an heirloom piece with wear consistent with its unique history.
