The Newsstand at Lorimer/Metropolitan

photo 2
Nestled in a nook at the Metropolitan station in Williamsburg Brooklyn, The Newsstand greets thousands of commuters at the intersection of the G and L subway lines. I must admit to walking by it over a dozen times, transferring to the L on the way to the studio, before I really stopped to look inside. To my surprise, it wasn’t just a little bodega selling snacks to passerbys. I noticed right away a well curated selection of independent art publications and other oddities. When I spoke to the shop’s manager and curator Lele Saveri, I learned of The Newsstand’s origins as a collaboration between the creatives at ALLDAYEVERYDAY and the independent publishing specialists, 8-Ball Zine Fair. The idea behind this unique space and shop is to create a one-month open platform for independent publishers to essentially conduct book launches, artist signings and connect with new/avid readers. The Newsstand opened its doors on the 15th of June and will close on July 20th, so be sure to check it out Brooklyners!

We discovered a really interesting coin operated Zine dispenser in the shop and couldn’t help but try it out. After inserting four quarters, a self-published work of original text and images in limited circulation popped out. There were works from over 40 artists and writers in the dispenser, but we were lucky enough to pull out one by Lele himself. He autographed our copy. We also happened to run into two of the other artists with works in the dispenser, Ari Marcopoulos and Fotine Paura, while visiting the shop.

For its supporters, participants and afficionados, The Newsstand is more than just a pop-up space. With a focus on personal creative expressions, these modern magazines and zines offer a deeper look at culture in a way rarely seen in mass media. It’s a meeting place for leading underground and independent publishers around the world. Literally!
