Cold Spring, NY

Cold-Spring-Trolley

Daytrips are always a nice way to get a break from the bustling city and to get your adventure fix in to rejuvenate for the work week ahead. So when my antiquing connoisseur of a friend, Natalie, mentioned the multitude of vintage shops that lined the main street of Cold Spring, it was enough to get me out of bed at 7am on a Sunday morning to catch the metro rail, just over an hour north of NYC.

We spent the day discovering all the charm this unique town had to offer – starting off with brunch at a little farm-to-table style restaurant called Hudson Hil’s.

The best discovery of the day was a beautiful shop called Cold Spring Apothecary. They make their own skin/hair/body care products with green alternative ingredients and they have a nice selection of all natural teas at the back.

It was easy to get lost perusing the many affordable specialty and vintage shops. We found the best stuff at The Cold Spring Antiques Center (in an old 19th century Victorian bank building), Bijou Galleries and Momminia (for Effie Calavaza turquoise originals, other vintage jewelry, and gems). If you don’t have shopping in mind, the area’s known for their great hiking trails as well.

In between vintage jewelry and furniture shopping, we stumbled upon original Picassos, Shieles and Matisses at the town’s antique and estate auction at an old church. And we lounged by the river before catching the train back to Grand Central, perfectly timed to watch the beginnings of the evening thunderstorm through the train windows.

Special thanks to Natalie Shults for the beautiful photos, antiquing savvy and good company!
