My American Utopia
As a child, I followed Popeye’s example and ate plenty of spinach. In the town where I grew up, there were no telephone booths, so I would hide in the storeroom, imagining myself soaring through the sky with a large furoshiki cloth, hoping to rescue the weak. I cheered for King Kong as he climbed the Empire State Building and gazed at the stars, wondering if the Robinson family was safe.
As I grew older, I was mesmerized by the music, art, films, and culture flowing from America. Around the age of 30, I admired David Byrne, dressing up in an oversized suit like his.
Now, in 2024, at the age of 70, I’ve decided to hold a solo exhibition in New York. I wonder how my work will be received in America today.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Nalata Nalata for giving me this opportunity. And I look forward to being in attendance at my first exhibition in America.
