Here’s a quick look at our soon to be Pop Up shop location. It will be on the corner of a small side street called Extra Place in East Village, on 1st between 2nd ave and the Bowery.
Many know it as the old alley that the back door of CBGB opened up to and many have other personal connections to this spot.
It’s special historical significance ranges anywhere from being home to overcrowded tenements over a century ago to being lined with speakeasies during Prohibition era.
In 1976 when the Ramones shot the cover for their first self-titled album on Extra Place, the alley became a symbol of New York City’s punk movement.
The area holds a special place in our hearts because our first apartment in NYC was a loft right around the corner above ‘Mars Bar’ (when it was still around) and we remember having to walk by the alley everyday.
Having just celebrated our five year mark in the city, we’ve come to realize how quickly establishments here turnaround and how often we find ourselves reminiscing on something that once existed and is now long gone. I’m sure many locals have the same feelings of the good ol’ days at [insert favourite joint here]. It’s bittersweet but evolution is inevitable. The important thing to remember is that sometimes a place can change over time but the stories will be everlasting. All we know is, we’re happy to be a small part of this new story. Here’s to Extra Place!
